When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit by Judith Kerr; Review by Isabella M.

The historical fiction story, When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit, by Judith Kerr, is a very touching story. It is about a nine-year-old, Anna, who has to move from place to place after Adolf Hitler rose to power in Germany, where she and her family lived during 1933.

Anna, brother Max, her mother, and her father are Jewish so they fled once Adolf became Chancellor because Anne's father had a bad feeling about the man and his official beliefs. At first, they just moved to Stuttgart, Switzerland, right outside Germany's border. But even this small move could have ended in a tragedy. If someone had found that they were Jewish and trying to leave Germany, that person could turn them in, which could eventually lead to death. But luckily, this didn't happen. Once the family got to Switzerland, they met Anna's father who had gone ahead earlier to get a hotel room and other necessary arrangements. After they settled, Anna and Max went to school. But after a while in Switzerland, the family moved to France and they all learned French. After some tough times due to money issues in France, Anna, Max, and her parents moved to England so Papa could accept a job offer. And again, the family learned another language! This story ended while the family was in England and all was well. I hope it stayed like that!

I really enjoyed this story for many reasons. I liked the time period and I liked to hear the way this family made it through their hardships. Anna was such a strong character even though she had to face so many dilemmas through the moves and all the danger that surrounded her. She puts on a strong face although, at times, she was really afraid. I would recommend this book for these reasons and also because you can really get into the story and feel like a member of the family because the author describes their feelings so well. In short, When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit is a great read.
