So B. It By Sarah Weeks
Twelve year old Heidi has been living with her mentally retarded mother all her life. Her mom can't do much though and can only say 23 words (if you include a word that doesn't exsist- soof). Heidi has no idea where she came from. She asks her next door apartment neighbor, Bernadette, and she says she has no idea and that Heidi and her mom just showed up knocking at her door one day. She says "it was like you fell from the sky." Heidi really wants to know her life history. She says "how can a person live without knowing their history?" One day Heidi finds old pictures of her mother. It looks like she grew up in a place for mentally retarded people called Hilltop in Liberty, New York. Heidi is begging to go to Liberty by bus but she has a problem. Bernadette has angoraphobia which means she is afraid to go outside or even leave the house!! Bernadette isn't going to let a little 12 year old girl go by herself. Heidi has a lucky streak so she always wins anything. She goes to a cash machine and wins a game which rewards her with enough money to buy a round trip bus ticket to Liberty, New York and back to Reno Nevada. Heidi finally convinces Bernadette to let her go, and Heidi watches her mother and Bernadette as she leaves for her journey. Does Heidi really want to know her life history, or not?

This seems like it's a really interesting book. It must be really hard to have a mother like that- like only being able to say 23 words and all. It would also be really annoying not knowing your family history, I hope she goes to Liberty and sucessfully finds her life history!
