Wednesday Wars is a realistic fiction book by Gary D. Schmidt. Holling Hoodhood goes to Camillo Middle School and on the first day of 7th grade there was one kid Mrs.Baker hated more than anyone. Him. Since
Holling is Presbyterian and all the other kids are either going to Hebrew or Catechism school on Wednesday afternoons he is stuck with Mrs.Baker,alone.Mrs.Baker makes Holling read Shakespeare outside of class. When Mrs.Baker orders cupcakes for a veterans meeting all the kids think Holling will get one since it's just him and Mrs.Baker. So then the kids make Holling get one for each kid in the class. Holling is already loaded with other problems. Mrs.Baker hates him, he has to be nice to her since her family owns the Baker Sporting Emporium and Hollings dad might desighn a building for them. Holling goes to Goldman's Best Bakery to order a bunch of delicious creampuffs. It turns out he doesn't have enough money, and he can't go to school empty-handed. Mr Goldman needs someone who knows Shakespeare so they can be in a play. Holling steps up to the plate and performs in the play. His classmates are satisfied with the creampuffs.
Holling Hoodhood has a huge problem. He lives right in the middle of Long Island. He is really smart too. He might of failed math last year but this year he does Shakespeare with Mrs.Baker. He can understand it and recite parts of it too. Holling is also really athletic. He can run really fast(Mrs.Baker taught him). He runs so fast he made the school's travel team, which is all 8th graders except him.
I enjoyed Wednesday Wars by Gary D. Schmidt. I liked it because it tells the story of a seventh grade boy facing problems with his teacher in the year 1967. Hollings family is dealing with problems his dad is trying to design peoples buildings and his sister wants to be a flower child. A flower child is a person who wants peace and no war.
In the end of the book Holling goes on an adventure after a runaway relative. Before that he saves his older sister from an aciddent. Read the exciting book Wednesday Wars and discover if Mrs. Baker and Holling ever become friends.
